Hybrid Learning Faculty Training

#VirtualLearning #Just-in-Time-Training

As the Educational Technology Specialist at a private, college-preparatory high school with a 1:1 iPad program, I support faculty technology integration and professional development. Administrators and faculty members at my school have varying levels of technology and digital literacy, further impacted by the rapid transition from online learning to hybrid learning due to COVID-19 protocols. I identified the need for a series of targeted faculty trainings via Zoom on the hybrid learning instructional model to address critical knowledge gaps and anticipated pain points within the limits of a three-week turnaround.

    The Problem

Most faculty members measured at a low level of digital and technology literacy, which had an impact on their success, flexibility, and ease of teaching in a remote, online learning format.

The decision to rapidly transition to synchronous, hybrid learning mid-semester due to easing COVID-19 protocols further exasperated this problem with limited time and resources to allocate directly toward faculty professional development and significant increases in faculty workload and stress.

Faculty had no experience implementing a new hybrid learning instructional model that required teaching synchronously to both remote, online learners and in-person students.

    The Solution

An instructional series on hybrid learning focusing on core essentials of technology setup, hybrid management and instructional strategies. The three trainings were delivered via Zoom using Google Slides with infographics and videos designed, developed, and edited in Lucid Charts and Screencast-o-Matic. Content focused on essential skills for facilitating a hybrid learning instructional model and linking faculty prior knowledge to the hybrid context.

Post-implementation faculty evaluations indicated a 4.29 (out of 5.00) average satisfaction rating with 78% of respondents marking helpful or very helpful in how the trainings supported their transition to teaching hybrid learning.

At the start of each module, learners are introduced to the content that will be covered, the tasks they will be asked to complete and the learning objectives that will measure their success.

    Technology Setup & Workflow

Content is delivered through a series of audio and video instruction. Interactive knowledge checks such as multiple-choice quizzes, drag-and-drop elements, multimedia content creation and reflection videos are used to allow learners to apply their knowledge and receive feedback.

    Hybrid Management

Throughout the course, learners will adopt the role of a new social media manager in a series of story-based scenarios. They will demonstrate their learning by making decisions and completing the tasks outlined in each scenario.

“[The Educational Technology program] was so helpful in giving direction of doing hybrid school. I would have felt lost. PD’s of showing step-by-step directions were very helpful.”
